Elkanah House is one of hundreds of schools from across the Western Cape that participated in UCT’s annual Mathematics competition and were placed 11th overall.
Almost 10 000 students participate either as individuals or in pairs from Grade 8 to Grade 12.
The Elkanah House students who achieved in the top 10% of their grade are:
Alistair Border (16th for Grade 10 individuals), Jake Budler (18th for Hr Grade 9 individuals), CJ Jang (45th for Grade 11 individuals), Jae Won Kim (45th for Grade 8), Mikal van Dyk (48th for Gr 12 individuals), Andre Schwartz and Luke Hahn (8th for Gr 11 pairs), Jacques Fooy and Hans Metz (22nd for Gr 8 pairs), Sheldon Blackbeard and Bryce Bekker (15th for Grade 10 pairs), David Laing and Henry Tromp (40th for Grade 10 pairs).
Mickey Chew came first in the competition for Grade 10 individuals, with a fantastic 92% average. Mickey was also awarded a Bronze medal in last year’s Harmony Gold Olympiad, South Africa’s premiere Mathematics Competition, for being placed among the top ten juniors in the country. He is currently part of UCT’s training programme for the Pan-African and International Mathematics Olympiads.
