Eyewitness News reports the City of Cape Town said on Thursday its plan to overhaul public transport would improve more than just local travelling woes.

Despite delays plaguing the start of the Integrated Rapid Transit System, officials were convinced it would transform Cape Town into a leading international city.

When completed, the IRT will be the biggest single project ever implemented by the city but it has not been devoid of controversy.
